Being a Winemaker is not just about making wine.
You’re a storyteller, a historian, a scientist, a memory maker…
Each time you create wine, you are articulating a sense of place. It’s the delicate balance of rich soil, expressive fruit, selected oak, and the inimitable house style, transporting you to a land of sunshine, undulating hills and verdant vineyards.
You’re the creator of bottled poetry.
Celebrating seven generations and almost 150 years of family winemaking, the glass is always half full at Stanton & Killeen. They are looking for a Senior Winemaker to join the fold and take the business into their next phase of their ambitious vision.
Located in the heart of Rutherglen, northeast Victoria, Stanton & Killeen focus on showcasing their impressive portfolio of Portuguese varieties, flavoursome reds and luscious, award-winning fortifieds.
They are looking for an aspiring winemaker with a talent for capturing the essence of the vineyard and making the best quality wine possible. A significant investment into the winery this year has ensured quality production plant and equipment, an updated layout to increase efficiency and performance, and energy-efficient upgrades to the entire winery.
The most important attribute you can have is a team-focused mindset and a willingness to embrace both emerging and traditional winemaking styles. You will be the first person in Australia to make wine from Antão Vaz, a Portuguese white grape currently only grown at S&K. You will have access to an impressive group of fortified wine mentors, an increasingly rare and niche winemaking skill, preserving the heritage of the S&K house-style.
Learning fortified winemaking will be a rare skill in your oenological toolkit that you’ll have for rest of your career.
Reporting to the General Manager, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of winemaking operations. You’ll ensure the consistency of crafting exceptional wines from a sustainable vineyard whilst upholding excellence that Stanton & Killeen is known for. The business is soon to be certified through the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program – a passion for best practice in sustainability is essential.
You’re someone who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. This will strengthen your reputation within the team, ensuring technical direction with a focus on quality and practicality.
Winemaking is an art as well as a science, so having the knack to think outside the box and improvise is key. You’ll guide and collaborate on the development of wine style direction and portfolio offerings whilst exploring innovative opportunities and initiatives. This is where your true talents lie.
Exciting things are happening at Stanton & Killeen. It’s a small business with big goals. They make room for creativity, innovation, personal growth, leadership, community, respecting tradition and above all else, integrity. They are nimble and proactive.
With the Murray River and ski fields on your doorstep, quality local schools and great access to healthcare, Rutherglen is a vibrant community filled with growing families and young professionals. The region sells itself.
